In Short
Net worth is everything you own minus everything you owe. $660,000 of assets (home, savings, retirement, business equity) less $311,000 of debts (mortgage, car, student loan, cards) is a net worth of $349,000. There's no official “good” net worth, but for context the median U.S. family had $216,100 in the Federal Reserve's 2025 Survey of Consumer Finances [1][2].
How to Use the Net Worth Calculator
- Enter what your assets are worth today: cash, investments, retirement accounts, home, vehicles, business equity.
- Enter what you still owe on each debt: mortgage, auto and student loans, credit cards, business debt.
- Add your age to see the national median for your age group.
- Or tap Say It All: “I have 25k in savings and 150k in retirement, plus a 400k house with a 280k mortgage and 5,000 on credit cards.”
The Formula
Use market values for what you own (what it would sell for today) and current balances for what you owe.
- Total assets = cash + investments + retirement + home + vehicles + business equity + other
- Total liabilities = mortgage + auto + student loans + credit cards + business debt + other
- Net worth = total assets − total liabilities
- Debt-to-asset ratio = total liabilities ÷ total assets

What Is a Good Net Worth for My Age?
There's no official “good” number. Net worth depends on income, age, where you live and what you're working toward. The Federal Reserve's 2025 Survey of Consumer Finances gives useful context: median family net worth was $32,820 when the head of the family was under 35, $156,000 at 35–44, $254,670 at 45–54, $411,340 at 55–64, $431,900 at 65–74 and $504,600 at 75 or older [1][2].
Families headed by a self-employed person had a median of $575,100, partly because the business itself is an asset [2]. A median is the middle family, not a target: half had more and half had less.
How Do I Count My Business in Net Worth?
Count your share of what the business would sell for, not its revenue. If you've already subtracted the business's loans from that value, leave business debt at zero so you don't count it twice. Personal guarantees on business loans belong under liabilities only if they aren't already netted out.
For many owners the business is the largest asset and the hardest to sell quickly. Tracking cash and investments separately shows how much you could reach in a pinch.
How Often Do People Track Net Worth?
Monthly or quarterly is common. The trend matters more than any one number: paying down debt and adding to savings both raise it. The free Net Worth Tracker spreadsheet has a column for each month, and the Zentavos app updates net worth automatically from linked accounts.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate my net worth?
Add up the current value of everything you own, then subtract the balances of everything you owe. $500,000 of assets and $300,000 of debts is a net worth of $200,000.
What is the median net worth in the U.S.?
$216,100 for all families in the Federal Reserve's 2025 Survey of Consumer Finances. The average was much higher, about $1.23 million, because a small number of very wealthy families pull it up [2].
What is the median net worth by age?
Under 35: $32,820. 35–44: $156,000. 45–54: $254,670. 55–64: $411,340. 65–74: $431,900. 75 or older: $504,600 (2025 Survey of Consumer Finances, 2025 dollars) [2].
Should my home count toward net worth?
Yes. Count its market value as an asset and the mortgage balance as a liability. The difference is your home equity.
Can net worth be negative?
Yes. When debts are larger than assets, often early on with student loans or a new car loan, net worth is negative. Paying down debt and building savings both move it up.
