The 2026 Paycheck and Payroll Withholding Guide

Where every dollar of a paycheck goes, how employers figure withholding, and how a W-4 changes it.

In Short

Maryland has rates from 2% to 6.5% across 10 brackets after a single filer's standard deduction or exemption of $6,600 ($13,200 joint) in 2026. A single filer earning $60,000, paid every two weeks with no pre-tax deductions, takes home about $1,842.54 per paycheck ($47,906 a year), after $5,020 federal income tax, $4,590 Social Security and Medicare and $2,484 Maryland income tax.

How Maryland Taxes Your Paycheck

Maryland has rates from 2% to 6.5% across 10 brackets after a single filer's standard deduction or exemption of $6,600 ($13,200 joint). Maryland's 6.25% and 6.5% top brackets, added for 2025, continue in 2026. FAMLI payroll contributions are delayed to 2027.

Every county adds its own income tax, from 2.25% to 3.30%. Local tax isn't included in the result, so check your pay stub for the local amount.

How to Use the Maryland Paycheck Calculator

  1. Choose salary or hourly, then enter your annual salary or your hourly rate and hours per week.
  2. Pick how often you're paid, your filing status and the state you work in.
  3. Add your pre-tax 401(k) percent and any pre-tax health or HSA deduction per paycheck.
  4. Add extra withholding if you asked for it on your W-4.
  5. Or tap Say It All: “I make 85 thousand a year in Ohio, single, paid biweekly, with 6 percent to retirement.”

The Formula

The calculator works out the year, then divides by your number of paychecks. Federal income tax is an annual estimate from the 2026 brackets [1][2]; your employer's withholding method can differ slightly [3].

What Comes Out of a Paycheck?

Four kinds of money leave a paycheck before you see it. Pre-tax savings and benefits come first: 401(k) deferrals, health premiums and HSA contributions. Then federal income tax, which your employer withholds from your W-4 [3]. Then FICA: 6.2% Social Security on wages up to $184,500 in 2026 and 1.45% Medicare on every dollar [4]. Last, state and sometimes local income tax, plus state programs such as disability or paid family leave.

A 401(k) deferral lowers your income tax but not your Social Security and Medicare tax. Health premiums and HSA contributions taken through a cafeteria plan lower both, which is why they save more per dollar. The 2026 401(k) deferral limit is $24,500 [6].

How Is Federal Withholding Worked Out?

Employers use the IRS percentage method or wage-bracket tables in Publication 15-T with the answers on your Form W-4 [3]. This calculator takes the simpler annual route: your yearly wages after pre-tax deductions, minus the 2026 standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly), taxed with the 2026 brackets [1][2]. For a single W-2 job with no other income, the two come out close.

If you have two jobs, a working spouse, side income or big deductions, your W-4 settings change what's withheld. The IRS Tax Withholding Estimator is the official way to fine-tune it [7].

Which States Have No Income Tax on Wages?

Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming don't tax wages. Washington still has employee payroll premiums for paid family leave and the WA Cares long-term care fund, and Alaska withholds a small unemployment insurance tax.

Several states cut rates for 2026, including Georgia (4.99%), North Carolina (3.99%), Kentucky (3.5%), Indiana (2.95%), Mississippi (4%), Ohio (2.75% flat above $26,050), Oklahoma (4.5% top), Montana, Nebraska, Arkansas, Utah, West Virginia and South Carolina. Frequently Asked Questions

How much is take-home pay on $60,000 a year?

For a single filer in a state with no income tax, about $50,390 a year, or $1,938 every two weeks in 2026: $5,020 federal income tax, $3,720 Social Security and $870 Medicare. State income tax and pre-tax deductions lower it further.

How much is taken out of a $100,000 paycheck?

A single filer in Florida with no pre-tax deductions pays about $13,170 federal income tax, $6,200 Social Security and $1,450 Medicare in 2026: about 20.8% in all, leaving $79,180, or $3,045 every two weeks.

Does a 401(k) lower my taxes?

A traditional 401(k) deferral lowers your federal (and most states') income tax, but Social Security and Medicare are still due on it. Pennsylvania also taxes 401(k) deferrals. The 2026 limit is $24,500 before catch-up contributions.

Why is my actual paycheck different?

Your employer uses your W-4 and IRS Publication 15-T, and may withhold local taxes, other benefits or wage garnishments. Bonuses are often withheld at a flat 22%. Use this calculator as an estimate and compare it with your pay stub.

Are local income taxes included?

No. Cities, counties and school districts in states such as Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky, Missouri and New York levy their own taxes. The calculator flags those states, but local tax isn't included in the result.
